General Motors Debates Adding 400,000 Vehicles To Existing Airbag Recall

NC car recall injury lawyersThe National Highway Traffic Safety Administration says it is debating whether it will ask General Motors to add 400,000 more cars to its existing recall regarding defective air bags. The additional vehicles that might be recalled are 2012 model Chevrolet Cruze and Sonic compact vehicles as well as the Chevy Camaro and Buick Verano.

GM recalled thousands of vehicles late last year and then again in January due to trouble with airbags. According to the NHTSA, some of the vehicles included in the recall have been shown to have a defect where a shorting bar located inside the driver’s airbag may prevent the airbag from deploying in the event of an accident. If the airbag fails to deploy the risk of a serious injury for the driver would increase dramatically which is why the NHTSA is taking the matter so seriously. For its part, GM says the automaker is cooperating with the federal investigation and is awaiting further word from inspectors.

As we’ve written about before, airbag troubles are frequent causes for automotive recalls.
