GM announced a serious recall recently that impacts 200,000 SUVS sold in the U.S. The danger, according to the car company, is that the driver’s power door circuits can corrode in some cases and lead to problems such as vehicle fires. According to GM, the issue can lead to failure of power door locks and windows when the door’s circuit board is exposed to moisture. In some cases this can lead to melting, smoke or even vehicle fires. Even more worrisome is that these problems can occur even when the car is not turned on. This worry has prompted GM to tell owners affected by the recall to keep their vehicles parked outside and away from their garages.
The recall might sound familiar to GM owners and that’s because it is an extension of an existing GM recall involving nearly 250,000 SUVS that was begun a year ago. That recall involved SUVs sold in cold-weather states where the company said salt from roads caused damage to circuit boards that could eventually lead to car fires. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration apparently was not convinced the problem was limited to cold-weather states and asked the automaker to issue a voluntary recall for the issue, something GM agreed to go along with.
The models impacted by the recall are the 2006-2007 model Chevy TrailBlazers, GMC Envoys, Buick Rainiers, Isuzu Ascenders and Saab 9-7x.
The ominous warning from GM that consumers should avoid parking their vehicles in their garages understandably causes worry among some GM SUV owners. Though there are no reports of deadly house fires sparked by the GM recall issue, the company is afraid something of the sort might happen and is actively warning its customers about the possibility. Companies that are responsible for injuring others due to negligent or defective designs should be held financially accountable in the form of a personal injury lawsuit.
