Grantsboro, NC Parking Lot Crash Kills Pedestrian

A Pamlico County, North Carolina (NC), parking lot crash proved deadly for a pedestrian. The fatal wreck occurred outside of a Food Lion in the town of Grantsboro on the evening of May 16, 2015. The at-fault driver appears to have backed out of a spot without taking proper care. She struck and damaged three other vehicles in addition to hitting and killing the man who was on foot.

Police identified the driver involved in the deadly pedestrian crash as an 83-year-old woman. The deceased victim was also in his 80s. No one has reported details on why the elderly driver either lost control of her car or failed to see the man she ran into. The explanation may be as simple as failing to check all the blind spots around the vehicle, but health issues such as poor eyesight, slowed reflexes or confusion that can afflict older drivers may have played roles.

The larger lesson to learn from this tragedy is that parking lots contain many dangers for both drivers and pedestrians. The large number of obstacles, constantly changing traffic patterns and flows, and sometimes difficult sightlines can make avoiding crashes a challenge for even the most experienced, cautious and attentive drivers. And, sadly, when a car or truck does hit a person on foot, the injuries inflicted often lead to preventable deaths.

My Carolina wrongful death attorney colleagues and I send our deepest condolences out to the man who lost his life in Grantsboro. We also want to take this opportunity to urge everyone to be careful in parking lots, especially when backing out of spots.
