Hit-and-Run Driver Inflicts Fatal TBI on Conway, SC Woman

A head-on collision in Horry County, South Carolina (SC), left one woman dead from traumatic brain injuries and police searching for the driver of a second vehicle who they suspect caused the head-on collision shortly after 1 am on June 24, 2015. The fatal wreck occurred just outside the town of Conway, near the intersection of U.S. 701 and Pitch Landing Road.

Both cars remained on the scene of the crash, but emergency responders found only the deceased victim. Evidence indicates that other driver crossed the center line of the rural two-lane highway, struck the oncoming car, then fled on foot. It is unclear whether the fleeing driver is also the owner of the vehicle he or she was operating.

Finding that person is essential for several reasons, the most important probably being the need for the family members of the woman who lost her life to hold the responsible party accountable. Until it becomes clear who caused the crash, the victim's loved ones cannot request insurance settlements or awards from civil wrongful death lawsuits to cover funeral costs and other expenses unfairly and unexpectedly thrust upon them.

Speaking with the hit-and-run driver will also provide answers about the reasons for the wreck that may not be apparent from physical evidence. Was the person drunk or stoned? falling asleep behind the wheel? texting or checking a GPS device? Learning about an at-fault driver's impairment, fatigue or distraction informs decisions regarding the pursuit of criminal charges, as well as finding grounds for seeking monetary damages for negligence or recklessness.
