Emergency responders had to use the Jaws of Life to extract a truck accident victim from his vehicle after the car he was hit head-on by a tractor trailer. The accident happened at approximately 1:30 p.m. on Friday, at the 1100 block of Milton Highway in Ringgold, VA.
Investigators have not released the cause of the accident yet, but witnesses say that after the head-on collision between the compact car and the tractor trailer, the car went over the eastbound embankment and the truck went over the westbound embankment.
The driver of the car was trapped for about 40 minutes before fire fighters were finally able to free him from the vehicle. He suffered severe lower limb injuries and was airlifted to a North Carolina hospital. Authorities did not release the name of the hospital or the extent of the victim’s injuries.
The crash impact caused the truck’s trailer to overturn and detach from the cab. This caused the fuel tank of the vehicle to crack open, spilling diesel fuel onto the ground. In order to contain the spill, firefighters dug a ditch around the area. The truck’s driver was checked for injuries, but was not transferred to the hospital.
The Ringgold Fire and Rescue received assistance from Blairs Fire and Rescue, Keeling Fire and Rescue, the Virginia State Police, and the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT).
There are several reasons why tractor trailers accidents can result in more fatalities and/or serious injuries to crash victims.
Just the sheer size and difficulty maneuvering these vehicles can pose a danger to other drivers. Truck drivers can lose control of these massive vehicles very quickly. Not only can tractor trailers carrying oversize loads be dangerous, but empty tractor trailers can be just as deadly, and truck jackknifing is a common event in many truck accidents. Sudden stops or turns can also lead to truck rollovers, especially for trucks driving onto a highway.
