The United States Centers for Disease Control have reported that the majority of fatal drug overdoses in the country result from prescription drugs. The report shows that 60% of the nation’s 38,329 drug overdoses came from legal drugs prescribed by a physician.
The report states that the recent increase in drug overdoses come from the class of drugs known as opioid analgesics, of which medicines such as oxycodone and methadone are a part; opioid analgesics accounted for 75% of the increase; the CDC claims that from 1999-2010, the number of deaths related to these drugs has quadrupled.
The report comes on the heels of a related announcement from the CDC showing that prescription drug overdose is rising for American women; the rate of prescription drug death for women is five times higher than it was a decade ago, the agency claims. While the rate of overdose is still higher for men, the rate of women’s overdose rose 400% in the years 1999-2010, the same time period as the study showing a general rise in drug overdose.
