The Mesothelioma Victims Center in Washington, DC recently launched a new awareness initiative for this horrible, aggressive form of cancer that develops in the tissue that surrounds the lungs, stomach, heart and other organs.
The campaign has been started because some older people may be unaware of the signs of the disease and could miss out on a proper diagnosis and compensation. The disease is caused by exposure to asbestos fibers over many years in many industrial settings, including railroads, train yards, construction sites and mines. Many workers were exposed to asbestos in the 1950s and 1960s, but did not develop the disease until many years later.

Common symptoms include difficulty breathing, pain under the rib cage, pain, lumps and swelling in the abdomen, and rapid weight loss. The organization adds that it fears that the total number of people with the disease could be much higher than the statistics state. Further, the group states that many families never insist on a proper diagnosis.
Our personal injury firm in Virginia specializes in mesothelioma cases for railroad and related workers. We had a railroad worker client who worked on diesel engines for over 30 years, and he also stayed in motels that may have had asbestos surrounding the pipes and in the insulation. He developed mesothelioma just two years after his retirement.
Our legal team led by Richard Shapiro was able to prove that the worker’s work environment had led to his cancer. We eventually reached an undisclosed settlement in that mesothelioma case.
