A horrific multi-vehicle crash in Huntersville, N.C. has left a family in shatters, killing the 40-year-old mother and leaving her 3-year-old daughter in critical condition. The fatal crash occurred at Sam Furr and Westmoreland roads, where the victim had stopped her car on Sam Furr Road and was waiting to take a turn onto Westmoreland. As she was waiting, her car was slammed from behind by a pickup truck. That impact pushed her car directly into the path of an oncoming cargo van.
The young mother was pronounced the scene. The toddler was transported to Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte, where she is being treated for head trauma and multiple broken bones. According to the child’s father, his fiancé was driving their daughter to daycare. The crash happened less than one mile from their home.
The drivers of the cargo van and the pickup truck were both treated for non-life-threatening injuries. Police are investigating the crash and have not said whether there will be any charges filed.
Shortly before this fatal accident, police were at another Huntersville location investigating a serious car crash on Beatties Ford Road, when a car ran off the road. No details of that accident have been released by police, but witnesses report that several people were taken away from the scene of the crash on stretchers and transported by ambulances.
About one-third of all car crashes are rear-end collisions. Some of the most common causes of these accidents are distracted driving, tailgating, and speeding. Safety advocates, such as National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), say that forward collision warning technology should be standard in both passenger vehicles and commercial trucks.
Whether or not the police charge anyone for this deadly accident, the family of the mother who was killed and the young toddler who is fighting for her life should talk with a skilled North Carolina wrongful death attorney.
