NC Car Accident Injury Lawyers: Vision Zero Tries to End Fatal Traffic Accidents

Best NC accident injury lawyersThe state of North Carolina has announced a new initiative that officials hope will help bring an end to fatal traffic accidents on North Carolina roads. NC Vision Zero brings together multiple state agencies and organizations in the effort to combat against accident fatalities using the principles of the “5 E’s” – education, emergency response, enforcement, engineering, and everyone.

NC Vision Zero also released some startling statistics:

  • In 2016, traffic accidents were the number one cause of death in the United States for anyone between the ages of 5 through 24 years of age;
  • In 2015, there were 1,387 killed in traffic accidents in North Carolina. In the first seven months of 2016, there had already been 780 victims of fatal accidents in the state;
  • There are more than 3,350 bicyclists and pedestrians who are hit by vehicles in N.C. each year. Last year, 195 of those victims died from their injuries. This was a 15 percent increase over the previous year.

There are three factors that statistically reveal the impact they have on fatal vehicle accidents. The first is drinking and driving. Over 30 percent of all fatal crashes last year were alcohol-related. In fact, in the U.S., every 51 minutes, someone is killed by a drunk driver.

Wearing a seatbelt has been proven to save lives. More than 90 percent of North Carolina citizens wear seatbelts. Tragically, 42 percent of last year’s fatal crash victims did not buckle up.

Speeding is also another high risk factor that can lead to a fatal car accident. Last year, 30 percent of victims who were killed were in vehicle crashes that involved speeding.
