New Norfolk Tolls Required for Construction | Shapiro, Washburn & Sharp

Local government has agreed to expand the Mid-town Tunnel, extend the Martin Luther King Freeway, and make improvements to the Downtown tunnel.  However, to pay for the construction, it would require new tolls at two Norfolk tunnels.  According to Gov. Bob McDonnell, it would mean for the state to sign a $1.9 billion dollar contract with Elizabeth River Crossings LLC.  Gov. McDonnell plans to close the deal by the end of the year, as stated in the Daily Press.

Motorists traveling through the MLK Freeway will have to pay the $1 toll, or 50 cents if the vehicle plans to travel through either side of the tunnels.  However, no pocket change is required here, because there will be no tollbooths.  The new system will be completely electronic, according to the Virginia Department of Transportation spokeswoman Nora Chivers. The tolling stations will consist of giant gantries with attached systems to read user’s EZ Passes.  If a motorist does not own an EZ Pass, a picture of the vehicle’s license plate will be taken, and the owner will receive a bill in the mail.
