Norfolk Man Arrested in Fatal Virginia Beach Car Crash | Shapiro, Washburn & Sharp

One man is dead and two other people injured after a fatal car accident in Virginia Beach that police say was caused by a drunk driver. The 40 year-old Norfolk man has been arrested and faces multiple charges.

According to police, the alleged drunk driver was driving a 2003 Toyota pickup truck south in the 2200 block of Princess Anne Road when his vehicle drifted off the road to the right. As he tried to recover, he over-corrected and crossed into oncoming traffic in the northbound lane. The Toyota truck struck a 2000 Taurus, which sent the Taurus spinning. The car finally came to a stop in the intersection of Princess Anne Road and Three Oaks Drive. Moments after it smashed the Taurus, the Toyota was hit by a 2000 Volkswagen Beetle.

The driver of the Taurus, 84 year-old John William Hutchison of Virginia Beach, was rushed to a nearby hospital, where he died from injuries sustained in the crash. The passenger in the Taurus and the driver of the Volkswagen Beetle were also transported to the hospital with injuries.

The driver of the Toyota had a minor child in his vehicle when the crash occurred. Neither the driver, nor the child, was injured in the accident. The driver has been charged with DUI – Child Present, Involuntary Manslaughter and Maiming and was being held without bond in the Virginia Beach Correctional Center.

The decision the driver of the Toyota made to get behind the wheel of his truck after drinking was a tragic one. A family grieves for their loved one who was killed. And two other victims may be facing a long road to recovery for their injuries. All those affected by this accident should consult with a Virginia wrongful death attorney.
