North Carolina Nursing Home Nightmares Uncovered by NBC-17 Investigation | Shapiro, Washburn & Sharp

What Happened:

In an on-going investigation of nursing home conditions in North Carolina, NBC-17 has reported twice this year about frightening allegations of abuse and neglect. In January, NBC-17 reported that of the 125 nursing homes they investigated within a 100 mile radius of the City of Raleigh, more than 30 had “much below average” inspection ratings. Facilities with citations of serious care violations are labeled as “Special Focus Facilities.” The U.S. government calls these facilities the “most poorly performing homes” and this status means they are in danger of losing federal funding.  In May, a former resident of Durham’s Carver Living Center, a “Special Focus Facility,” spoke out about the treatment he received. The former resident, a man without legs, said he had to lie for hours in his own excrement waiting for help to get out of bed. He is one of more than a dozen residents that have filed complaints with the State against the Durham Carver Living Center in the eight months prior to May. According to the State, the allegations of abuse and neglect are difficult to prove citing a lack of evidence.

The North Carolina Nursing Home Neglect Lawyer’s Perspective:

Nursing home abuse and neglect cannot be tolerated. In the case of this particular facility, Carver Living Center’s sub-standard rating together with the number of formal complaints logged against it, point strongly to the legitimacy of the allegations. Help from an experienced North Carolina nursing home attorney can aid abused and neglected clients in knowing their full legal rights and possible ways to be compensated for their suffering.
