An accident in Newport News, Virginia (VA), has left a Hampton resident hospitalized with life-threatening injuries. According to a report in the November 30, 2011, Virginian-Pilot, the man was hit by a car and a minivan at an intersection near Mercury Boulevard and Jefferson Avenue.

WAVY-TV 10 added details from eyewitness accounts that the car crash victim had stepped off the curb almost immediately after the light changed. Police have not filed any charges against the people involved in the wreck.

Fall 2011 has been a bad period for pedestrians all across Hampton Roads. In three of the most significant incidents, a crossing guard lost her life in Chesapeake when she was hit by an SUV while on duty, a Marine died after being hit while jogging in formation on the Yorktown Naval Weapons Station, and a young girl sustained traumatic brain injuries while crossing a street in Virginia Beach.

Pedestrians safety is a constant concern, both for the people on foot themselves and for anyone behind the wheel of a car, truck, SUV or minivan. It is too early to know all the details of the accident in Newport News, but I do wish the man a full and speedy recovery.
