As the lawsuits against Pradaxa have increased, new risks of the blood-thinning drug have come to light. The drug, released in 2010 to prevent strokes in victims of atrial fibrillation, has been the recipient of much legal action over the past three years. Pradaxa’s function is as a blood thinner; however, the drug has been alleged to cause internal bleeding in its users at a rate of up to five times more than its competitor drug, warfarin (the FDA denies such a claim, but several studies have shown the FDA’s assertions to be doubtful).
Most recently, a study given at the Congress of the International Society on Thrombosis and Haemostasis suggests that, based on the study of 23,000 subjects, patients on Pradaxa also have the added risk of thirty-two to forty-five percent higher chance of heart attacks while on the drug. The large number of Pradaxa suits has been gathered to one federal court in Illinois under the heading of MDL No. 2385
