Charlotte School Bus Full of Children Crashes into House

A school bus full of children crashed into a house in southeast Charlotte. There were 23 Randolph IB Middle School students and the driver inside the bus at the time of the crash. Fourteen of the children, as well as the driver, were transported to local hospitals for treatment due to injuries sustained in the bus crash.

According to law enforcement, the bus was traveling down Briardale Drive, which is off W.T. Harris Boulevard, when the driver swerved to avoid hitting a cat. That led to the bus rolling down a hill, crashing into a parked vehicle, and crashing into a home. The owner was in the house at the time of the crash, but was not hurt. Police say the driver was traveling at 25 mph, which is the posted speed limit.

Witnesses to the crash describe a chaotic scene. Neighbors describing the scene to media said that many of the students attempted to climb out of the windows of the bus and many of the students were visibly upset, with some crying hysterically.

Students told police that immediately after the crash the bus driver, who could not move because of her injuries and had blood all over her face, was yelling at the children to get out of the bus as there was smoke coming from the engine.

The driver is still hospitalized. She has been suspended with pay following an investigation of the crash by the bus company. A bus company spokesperson described this as normal protocol.

Last year, our Carolina personal injury law firm reported on a news investigation which uncovered that there is almost $6 million paid out in school bus accident claims in North Carolina every year. One of the most common causes of these accidents was speeding.

When we send our children off to school each morning, we rely on the school bus companies to hire drivers who will keep our children safe. If your child has been injured in a school bus accident, contact an experienced North Carolina personal injury attorney to find out what legal recourse you may have against both the driver and the school bus company for the pain and loss your child has suffered.
