Police have announced that the driver of an SUV involved in a fatal accident that left six people dead was going nearly 40 miles per hour over the posted speed limit. Police in Spencer, NC have said that the driver of an SUV that was involved in a crash that left six people dead was speeding at the time of the collision. Police say the SUV was going 37 miles per hour over the posted speed limit right before it left the road and crashed into a large tree.
Though such a huge level of speeding is a concern in any situation, it’s especially amazing given that the posted speed limit on the road was only 30 miles per hour to begin with. That means the driver was traveling at more than twice the posted speed. Authorities who are working to piece together the accident say that after the car left the roadway it hit a small tree and then another, larger tree. After that it caught fire.
Six people ended up dying in the accident. Only three passengers, all children, survived the terrible crash. Even if criminal charges are pursued, a civil claim against the driver can still proceed.
