Around 9:30 a.m., a person driving a Dodge Magnum ran a stop sign and hit a car waiting at the traffic light near Owen Drive and Gillespie Street. The car the man hit contained a male driver and a young boy. The driver died at the scene of the accident; the boy was seriously injured and was transported to the hospital.
Fayetteville Police say the Dodge was speeding at the time of the accident. In fact, the impact was so severe the two vehicles were thrown 400 feet from the intersection.
A witness told a reporter it was the worst accident she had ever seen, and simply horrible because “[t]hat person was just sitting there waiting at the light. He wasn’t even moving and he was killed.”
My deepest sympathies go out to the man’s family. They must be shocked at the news of such a tragic and preventable accident. I truly hope the young boy is able to make a speedy and full recovery.
I can’t imagine how fast a car must be traveling to throw two vehicles 400 feet from the point of impact. That’s more than the length of a football field. To drive at such a speed it not only reckless, it shows a complete disregard for the safety of others on the road.
The victims in this accident did absolutely nothing to bring about this accident and may not have even known the speeding Dodge was going to hit their vehicle until it was too late. The Dodge driver’s actions have robbed a family of their loved one and changed a child’s life forever. Even if this young boy recovers physically, the trauma of this horrific scene can never be erased.
When a loved one is seriously injured or killed in a car accident, moving forward may seem impossible. Families question how they will pay for expensive medical care, and when the victim who died is a family’s primary breadwinner, they may also worry about how they will pay the everyday costs of living.
