Teen Killed, Driver in Critical Condition Charged with DWI

A 17-year-old boy is dead after the car he was a passenger in ran off the side of the road and into a ditch. The fatal crash occurred Friday night, at approximately 10 p.m. in Lenoir County, North Carolina.

According to reports from the Lenoir County Highway Patrol, the car was being driven by a 42-year-old man on NC 903 near Seven Springs when it suddenly went off the road and landed in a ditch on the left side of the highway. The victim was pronounced dead at the scene by emergency responders.

The driver of the car was transported to Vidant Medical Center in Greenville where he remains in critical condition. Preliminary investigation by law enforcement indicates that both alcohol and speed played a role in the fatal accident. There were no other vehicles involved in the crash. The driver has been charged with driving under the influence. The investigation is still ongoing and more charges may be pending.

There are reports that neither the victim nor the driver was wearing seat belts at the time of the accident.
