A tragic bus accident in West Texas has left at least 10 people dead. The accident occurred this morning in Penwell. According to reports, a bus carrying 12 prisoners and corrections officers was crossing a bridge when the bus skidded on ice, crashed down an embankment between two overpasses and crashed into a passing train.
Killed in the crash were eight prisoners and two correction officers. The bus was transporting the prisoners from Abilene to El Paso. Five other people were transported to Medical Center Hospital, where four were listed in critical condition, one in serious condition. Reports from the Texas Department of Criminal Justice say four of those injured are prisoners and one is a corrections officer.
Witnesses to the crash say the bus landed in the middle of the train, and was then dragged as the train continued to travel down the track before coming to a stop.
The train was owned by Union Pacific and was carrying freight. There were no UP employees injured in the crash.
One emergency responder described the scene of the deadly crash this way, “It's as bad as you can imagine. In 32, years it's as bad as anything I've ever seen.” He compared the incident to the fatal Midland train accident during a Veterans Day parade in 2012.
