A 17-year-old student at Roger Bacon Academy in Columbus County, North Carolina (NC) was killed in a car wreck that may have been caused by a driver that was texting while driving. The victim was a passenger in a car driven by another teenager who was reportedly texting behind the wheel, according to wect.com.
The fatal car crash occurred at the intersection of Old Highway 87 and Fertilizer Plant Road.
My deepest sympathies go out to the family of the victim. This was a tragic accident and it so frustrating to read about these texting while driving car wrecks since they are preventable. Just think, if the driver had been more responsible, maybe the victim in this car accident would be alive today.
The at-fault driver was charged with misdemeanor of death by a motor vehicle, failing to yield, and texting while driving. A law was passed in 2009 restricting texting while driving in NC. The law states you must be parked prior to sending a text message.
Hopefully teenaged drivers in NC will take a lesson away from this terrible tragedy – do not text and drive. It is on par with drinking and driving.
