The dangers to teens on the road is well known and documented. For example, in the US, seven teenagers are killed each day in alcohol related traffic wrecks. Sometimes, a fatal accident can be the result of just being in the wrong place at the wrong time. The two girls in Virginia Beach were minding their own business, sitting at a red light and had done nothing wrong to cause this collision. However, a lot of times the situation is one involving drinking and driving by a teenager’s friend. More education is necessary to make sure that teenagers understand that operating a motor vehicle is always potentially dangerous. Youngsters need to understand not to get in the car with anyone who has been drinking or using drugs. The safety of your children is also vastly improved if they are wearing safety belts. This horrible accident in Virginia Beach also shows something important about automobile insurance. Many people do not realize that the amount of insurance coverage they carry on their policy not only protects them from being sued by someone they hurt with their car, but also protects them and their family if they are hurt by a driver who is uninsured or not carrying enough automobile insurance. For example, an illegal immigrant is probably more likely than others to not have any or sufficient automobile insurance. In this situation, the auto insurer for the family of the girls who got killed would stand in the shoes of the at fault driver and provide coverage for them. Thus, I hope that the families of these girls were carrying good insurance limits on their own policies. No amount of money makes the loss of a child or sibling less painful. However, being able to make some recovery or get compensation for this automobile accident may help the families to heal and can be used for the care and protection of the deceased kids’ brothers and sisters. Obviously, I hope that such a horrendous tragedy never happens to you and your family. Realistically though, given the number of teenagers involved in serious motor vehicle collisions, many resulting in death, we are all likely to be touched by this kind of tragedy on the road. Having sufficient automobile insurance including uninsured motorist coverage and underinsured motorist coverage will give you peace of mind that financial stress will not be an additional problem in the event that someone in your family gets hurt or killed by a car accident.
