A toddler girl who fell from a fifth-floor balcony at Sandcastle Oceanfront Resort Hotel in Virginia Beach, VA, died in June 2011, according to the Virginian-Pilot.

The girl, whose family lived in Staunton, Virginia, fell from a balcony when she was playing with an inflatable toy while two adult relatives supervised. The toy became wedged in the railing and she slipped through and landed on a patio of the Ammos Authentic Greek Cuisine. The girl was taken to Sentara Virginia Beach General Hospital, then flown to Sentara Norfolk General Hospital.

The accident was investigated for foul play or neglect. Detectives tried to figure out how the child fell from the balcony, which was secured by a 4-foot-high railing with tightly spaced bars that extend to the floor.

Many witnesses, friends, family members, and the Sandcastle Oceanfront Resort Hotel manager cried at the scene, and were very saddened by the tragedy.
