A major Toyota distributor has announced that it will be recalling 3,235 vehicles in only a few southern states, including North and South Carolina. The distributor, Southeast Toyota Distributors of Deerfield Beach, Florida, said that there were problems detected with airbag sensors.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration said that the airbag weight sensors could malfunction due to not being properly calibrated. The distributor is one of several regional distributors that import and prepare Toyotas prior to being sold by dealers. The problems were seen in the front passenger seats of various Toyota models manufactured between 2009 and 2013. Only those cars sold in North Carolina, South Carolina, Alabama, Florida and Georgia are affected by the recent recall. Also, only those cars that come equipped with seat covers, seat heaters and headrest-mounted LCD screens are included.
In the even of an accident, the weight sensor problem could mean that the passenger-side airbag may deploy improperly. The weight sensors are meant to determine if the seat is occupied or if a small child is in the seat and a calibration problem may provide incorrect information for the airbag system. The problem has apparently been found to be two employees who were using incorrect calibrating tools.
The vehicles included in the recall include the following:
- 2009-2012 Tacoma, 4Runner, Camry, Camry Hybrid, Prius and RAV4
- 2009-2010 Avalon, FJ Cruiser and Highlander Hybrid
- 2010-2013 Corolla, Sienna and Tundra
- 2009-2013 Highlander and Venza
- 2012 Prius V
- 2010-2012 Sequoia
