What Happened

The Monitor and Merrimac Memorial Bridge-Tunnel was shut down briefly on February 14, 2013 because of an accident.

The crash happened in the southbound lane, but emergency personnel shut down the northbound lanes as well in order to get to the accident quickly. A spokesperson from the Virginia State Police said the crash involved a tractor trailer and a car. The car involved in the crash was completely mangled and left unrecognizable; the driver was taken to a local hospital for personal injuries. The accident is still under investigation.
