A tractor trailer crash in Republic, Missouri (MO) killed one late Saturday night. The Missouri Highway Patrol stated that the accident happened at 11 pm on Highway MM in Republic.
According to police, the tractor trailer drifted off the right side of the road and flipped. The driver of the truck was pronounced dead at the scene.
Although we do not know the exact cause of the crash in this case, it is likely that driver fatigue was a factor. Our legal firm in Virginia has worked on many personal injury cases involving truck crashes, and we know that 13% of all truck crashes are due to the driver falling asleep at the wheel.
Drivers can easily fall asleep when driving, or become less responsive to road conditions because they drive too much without a break. The US Department of Transportation also states that 8000 truck crashes per year happen due to tired drivers.
In some cases, driver fatigue can be indirectly due to shippers pushing their drivers to get to destinations faster, which can lead drivers to hit the road when they are too tired.
Truck drivers should always be sure that they are not exceeding the legal number of hours they can drive.
