Two bicyclists were killed over the weekend in separate accidents that took place in Virginia Beach, Virginia.
News Channel 3 reported on Saturday night, May 9, 2015, that a bicyclist was hit by a car around 8PM near the intersection of Northampton Boulevard and Baker Road. That investigation is ongoing; however, officers on the Virginia Beach Police Department's Fatal Accident Crash Team were able to report that the bicyclist died as a result of the crash.
13 News Now reported a separate crash on Sunday, May 10, 2015 involving a bicyclist. This bicyclist died after being hit by a car at the intersection of Virginia Beach Boulevard and North Great Neck Road/London Bridge Road in Virginia Beach. Police believe this accident happened shortly before 3PM. Investigators said the cyclist was heading east on Virginia Beach Boulevard, maneuvered through the turning traffic, and crossed four lanes, entering into the path of a Pontiac Grand Prix.
The driver of the Pontiac stopped immediately after hitting the cyclist and attempted to render aid. Unfortunately, the cyclist died at a nearby hospital as a result of his injuries.
Cycling is certainly not new to our area and Virginia Beach drivers should always remain alert and share the road with bicyclists. If Virginia Beach is going to remain one of the healthiest and fittest
cities in America we have to also strive to be one of its safest.
