Virginia Beach, VA Proposes Adding Bike Lanes to Shore Drive | Shapiro, Washburn & Sharp

Road engineers for Virginia Beach, VA have started designing 4-foot bicycle lanes for Shore Drive, which has been the scene of several deadly and seriously injurious collisions between bicyclists and drivers since 2009. The latest collision, marking the fourth time since May 2011 that a cyclist had been injured by a motor vehicle on Shore Drive, happened on the morning of August 17, 2011, when a truck smashed into a bicyclist. Police charged the truck’s operator with reckless driving.

According to the Virginian-Pilot, the first section is planned for the eastbound side and will run 4 miles from Kendall Street, west of First Landing State Park, to 83rd Street at the Oceanfront. Openning is set for March 2012, and construction of a second lane on the westbound side of Shore Drive is expected to begin in July 2012.
