Virginia Beach Couple Returns Home Safe After Cruise Ship Tragedy | Shapiro, Washburn & Sharp

As of this writing, six people are known dead and many others remain missing after the Costa Concordia cruise ship ran aground near a small island off Italy. The ship, owned by a Carnival Crusie Lines subsidiary, crashed because of captain’s error. He is now being charged with manslaughter and abandoning the ship while it was still being evacuated.

This incident is such a tragedy for all involved. Thankfully, a couple from Virginia Beach, VA, who were aboard the ship when it wrecked returned home with no injuries. Still, the anxiety from the tragedy caused the couple to cancel their interview with Brian Williams on Rock Center. It’s obvious that the emotional toll this accident is taking should not be underrated.

Travelers expect passenger safety to be the number one priority in the eyes of cruise ship companies. Obviously, this is not always the case. Even if one escapes unscathed, there are still plenty of things to worry about. With the cruise liner in crisis, many had no where to turn for emergency passports or to take care of their lost money and credit cards.

Always purchase traveler’s insurance when you go abroad. Though insurance can cost between 5 and 7 percent of your trip, it will mean you have someone fighting for your rights as a passenger. Even if accidents like this one are rare, having the peace of mind to enjoy your vacation is worth the money.
