Virginia Teen Hospitalized After Being Hit By A Car | Shapiro, Washburn & Sharp

A girl in Virginia Beach is in the hospital recovering from serious injuries after authorities say she was hit by a car. Police have said that the 14-year-old girl was walking her bicycle across Princess Anne Road near Huckleberry Trail when a car came around a corner and hit her.

Neighbors who were on the scene at the time of the accident say it’s a miracle the wreck was not deadly. The area is known for accidents due to a lack of proper lighting and several neighbors say they have witnessed bus accidents and multiple car accidents in the last several months at the same location.

When the girl was struck by the car neighbors say they called for an ambulance immediately. By the time paramedics arrived, the girl was bleeding heavily and was in and out of consciousness. The 14-year-old was then transported to Sentara Norfolk General hospital where her father says she remains, recuperating. The girl’s father says his daughter was suffering from serious road rash, damage to her knees and elbows as well as deep cut on her forehead.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, 618 bicyclists died in crashes with passenger vehicles in 2010. Thankfully the accident in this case was not fatal, but it did leave the innocent cyclist with serious injuries. This incident is one of the tens of thousands of accidents each year involving bicycles and passenger vehicles that leave cyclists wounded. The NHTSA says that 52,000 bicycle injuries occur each year due to collisions with cars.
