Recently a tractor-trailer traveling up Route 220 in Wirtz, VA left the road and slammed into the Blue Ridge Antique Center located in Franklin County, before catching on fire. Sadly, the driver, who is from North Carolina, was killed in the terrible accident. An eyewitness described the scene as seeming as if a bomb had gone off. Four employees and as many as 10 customers were inside the building when the truck came racing through the front door and left several of these bystanders in need of treatment for their injuries.
Witnesses say at least five cars in the parking lot were damaged or destroyed and significant fire damage occurred to the building. Virginia State Police officials have said that the deadly tractor-trailer accident in Wirtz resulted in approximately $500,000 in damage. The cause of the accident remains under investigation.
Though the cause of the crash has yet to be determined, it appears as though the tractor-trailer driver may have lost control of his vehicle and slammed into the other vehicles. A critical issue for the injured bystanders is if the driver's loss of control stems from reckless behavior. For example, was the driver drowsy? Intoxicated? We will have to wait and see what the accident report reveals. The injured victims should consult with a Virginia truck accident injury attorney to discuss what legal options may be available to them.
