The driver of a tractor-trailer was killed Monday morning while traveling on I-81 in Montgomery County, Virginia (VA). The accident occurred just south of the Dixie Caverns exit. A pickup truck traveling in the opposite direction was pulling a horse trailer when a wheel came off of the trailer and flew through the windshield of the tractor-trailer. The driver of the pickup truck has been charged with having defective equipment.
Presumably, the driver of the pickup truck did not know a wheel was going to come off of his trailer while he was driving down the interstate. However, each person has a duty to make sure that their equipment is safe enough that an accident like this cannot happen.
