Driver Over-Corrects, Passenger Killed when Car Flips in Chesterfield Crash

A 34-year-old Petersburg woman was killed when the driver of the SUV she was riding in over-corrected the vehicle, causing it to overturn.

Police report that the 2000 GMC Jimmy was traveling on Interstate 95 in Chesterfield County when the driver, a 20 year-old woman also from Petersburg, drove off the road’s right shoulder. The driver over-corrected the vehicle, and the GMC began to roll over. One witness said the vehicle spun around approximately seven times before coming to a stop.

The victim, who was not wearing a seatbelt, was ejected from the SUV. She was pronounced dead at the scene.

The driver, who was wearing a seatbelt, managed to climb out of the SUV and was later transported to VCU Medical Center with serious injuries.

The fatal accident happened at the 56.5 mile marker at approximately 1 p.m. Police were forced to close all northbound lanes of Interstate 95 for two hours, causing a backup of traffic for about four miles. Virginia State Troopers are investigating the crash to determine what caused the vehicle to veer off into the travel lane.

One of the hardest things for a family to deal with is the tragic loss of a loved one. Although there is no amount of money that can ever compensate for that loss, when a death is caused by the negligence of another driver, there are legal options a victim’s family may have. If you’ve lost a family member in an accident, contact an experienced Virginia wrongful death attorney to discuss your options.
