Two People Killed in Early Morning Car Crash Following July 4th | Shapiro, Washburn & Sharp

According to the Virginian Pilot, two people were killed and two others seriously injured in a single vehicle crash early Sunday, July 5th.  The crash was reported around 4:15 a.m. at Helmick and Eislers Streets, near Norfolk’s naval station.  Two people were pronounced dead at the scene.  Two others were taken to the hospital where they were being treated for injuries.  All four of the individuals were adults.  A preliminary investigation indicated that the driver lost control and the vehicle overturned, striking a tree.  Alcohol and excessive speed do appear to be involved in the crash.  Police were working to identify the two individuals killed.  No additional information about them is available.

July 4th is always an exciting holiday and many times involves parties with lots of food and lots of alcohol.  Unfortunately, many people do not realize the importance of safety during holiday parties and other parties in general.  When you decide to go out for a holiday weekend, it is important to determine who will be your designated driver early in the night.  If someone promises to be the designated driver and can no longer perform that function, it’s very easy to call a cab or call someone else to get a ride.  Some people will complain that the price of a taxi isn’t worth it.  Clearly, the $15.00 to $20.00 you might spend on a cab ride is certainly worth your life.  In Norfolk, Virginia we are one of, if not the largest naval community in the country.  For holiday weekends especially use caution when deciding if you even want to drive yourself whether you’re drinking or not.  There are many drivers on the road who you would not want to be traveling next to because you don’t know what their level of intoxication might be.  In Norfolk, Virginia we have two major sources of holiday traffic.  We have a large beach, Virginia Beach, which attracts many tourists especially on holiday weekends.  This past holiday weekend there were several free concerts at the ocean front and many fireworks displays.  All of this excitement lends itself to parties and sometimes reckless behavior.
