The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) has news for those who ride buses that don’t pick up and drop off passengers at official terminals: curbside buses are significantly more dangerous and prone to traffic accidents than regularly scheduled buses associated with terminals.
In fact, the NTSB reports that curbside buses are seven times more likely to become involved in an accident than conventional passenger buses, with a poor record of 1.4 fatal accidents per every 100 vehicles in the last six years.
Recently, a Virginia curbside bus accident on Interstate 95 outside of Richmond left four people dead and over 50 others with serious injuries. An initial investigation of the VA bus crash has found that the driver was likely fatigued and fell asleep at the wheel in the seconds before running off of the road.
Why are curbside buses more dangerous?
Curbside buses have a history of violations not seen with more traditional carriers. Their drivers are more likely to be fatigued and less likely to be experienced. While 13.5 out of 100 curbside bus drivers were rated out-of-service, only five conventional bus drivers were out-of-service.
At the same time, the vehicles themselves are less likely to pass inspections and less likely to see regular maintenance. Finally, curbside bus companies are less likely to engage in required reporting to authorities.

Curbside buses gained appeal several years ago as one service began offering extremely cheap travel between New York and Boston for Chinese workers. Now, there are dozens of companies that offer rock-bottom ticket prices for trips up and down the East Coast.
