Patrick County Woman Killed in Virginia Big Rig Crash | Shapiro, Washburn & Sharp

According to Patrick County news sources, a Stuart woman was killed in a two-vehicle accident at the intersection of Route 58 and Route 640 on Monday afternoon, July 23.

The Virginia State Police stated that 73-year-old Cynthia Winters was driving a Saturn passenger car north on Route 640 when she allegedly pulled out in front of a tractor-trailer traveling east on Route 58. The car was broadsided by the big rig, and Winters was killed in the Virginia truck accident. The driver of the truck, 50-year-old Arlie Thomas of Meadows of Dan, suffered serious but non-life-threatening injuries in the collision. He was treated at Pioneer Community Hospital and released.

The truck crash is being investigated by the Virginia State Police Motor Carrier and Accident Reconstruction team. Authorities say that both drivers were wearing their seat belts at the time of the accident. It is not clear whether Winters stopped at the intersection before proceeding across Route 58. That particular Patrick County intersection has a history of collisions.

Sadly, fatal truck accidents at rural highway intersections are far too common in Patrick County and across Virginia. High speed limits mean that big rigs can take hundreds of feet to come to a complete stop, while other issues like driver fatigue, road hypnosis, wildlife crossing, and poorly-marked intersections also can create hazards.

The Virginia personal injury attorneys at Shapiro & Appleton send their condolences to the friends, family, and loved ones of Cynthia Winters in this tragic incident. We wish Arlie Thomas a quick and full recovery.
