Three Killed in Multiple Truck Accident in Virginia | Shapiro, Washburn & Sharp

A Powhatan County truck accident that involved five commercial vehicles left three people dead and three others injured is under investigation by local authorities. The fatal Virginia truck accident took place at 5:13 a.m. on Monday, March 26.

According to local news sources, the deadly traffic accident occurred on U.S. 60 near the intersection of Bell Road when a dump truck lost control and crossed the double-yellow line into oncoming traffic. It was struck head-on by a logging truck, which ran off of the road, overturned, and caught fire. Three other vehicles crashed into the scene in the following minutes, some hitting logs on the roadway.

The driver of the dump truck, 23-year-old Russell Abel of Chesterfield, died at the scene of the accident. The driver of the logging truck and the passenger in the logging truck were also pronounced dead at the scene. The driver of the third truck, 25-year-old Dray Jones of Cumberland, suffered critical injuries in the crash and was flown to a hospital for treatment by helicopter. The two other drivers, Michael Steis and James Dabney, suffered minor injuries.
