Two people were airlifted to the hospital with extremely serious injuries after a van slammed into the back of a stopped big rig on Route 29 south in Amherst County, Virginia. The VA truck accident took place at around four in the afternoon on Thursday, December 20, south of Virginia 130.
According to the Amherst Sheriff’s Office, 65-year-old driver Newlin Morgan fell asleep at the wheel of the van and drifted out of the right lane and onto the shoulder, where the vehicle struck the back of a stopped tractor-trailer. Two passengers in the van, 54-year-old Robin Morgan and 24-year-old Laura Morgan, were both airlifted from the scene of the accident to Lynchburg General Hospital. Laura Morgan was transferred to the University of Virginia Medical Center for specialized treatment of her critical injuries, while Robin Morgan remained in Lynchburg for treatment of multiple internal injuries.
The commercial truck that was parked on the shoulder of Route 29 had earlier suffered from mechanical issues and authorities say that it was legally parked in a pull-off at the time of the accident. The driver of the truck put emergency triangles out around the back of his truck to alert others on the road of his vehicle on the shoulder. The trucker was not injured in the collision.
The Virginia truck crash is still under investigation by the James River Regional Crash Team and other local authorities.
