A Virginia man suffered minor injuries in an I-40 car and truck accident that took place on Tuesday, November 27, 2012. One other person was injured in the wreck, while a third person was killed. The truck accident occurred at 12:30am.

According to local news sources, 46-year-old Daniel Coombes of Doswell, Virginia was driving on Interstate 40 near Knoxville when his vehicle hydroplaned. While his car was out of control, it slid into the back of a tractor-trailer traveling in the same direction, causing the big-rig to jackknife. The commercial truck drove off of the right side of the interstate, near the intersection of Asheville Highway, and rolled over.

The driver of the 18-wheeler, 24-year-old Kyle Whitlow, suffered minor injuries. Another man in the tractor-trailer, 45-year-old Aaron Wilkerson, was in the sleeper cab at the time of the truck accident and suffered fatal injuries in the wreck. Both drivers have been treated and released from the hospital – UT Medical Center – for their injuries.

Parts of I-40 and Asheville Highway were closed for several hours after the fatal truck accident as emergency responders helped the injured, investigated the crash scene, and cleared the wreckage. All lanes were opened by 9:00am.
