Virginia Trucker Killed in Tractor-Trailer Accident on I-85 | Shapiro, Washburn & Sharp

A Chesterfield County truck driver was killed in a traffic accident on Interstate 85 South early on Wednesday morning, January 18.

According to local news sources, 58-year-old Gary Wilkerson was driving a UPS truck on the interstate outside of Charlotte, North Carolina, when he lost control of his vehicle while driving across a bridge. His cab slammed into the median and came to a stop, while the two trailers he was pulling fell off of the bridge and onto the roadway below. Wilkerson was thrown from the cab and onto the roadway. It is not clear if he was wearing a seat belt at the time of the truck wreck.

The Virginia man had worked for UPS for twenty-five years. At the time of the crash, Wilkerson was completing a delivery route between Richmond, Virginia, and Charlotte. Wilkerson’s two adult daughters said that Virginia State Police informed them of their father’s death at around five in the morning on Wednesday. They told reporters that their father had always been a cautious driver. The cause of the accident is still under investigation.
