Contributory negligence is an antiquated legal doctrine that, unfortunately, remains alive and well in Virginia and North Carolina (two of only four states that still have it). Contributory negligence bars a victim from seeking recovery through a personal injury claim if it is determined that the victim contributed, even only slightly, to the accident that caused their injury.
