Bicyclist Killed In North Carolina Hit-And-Run

Comments (0)

Police in Wilmington, NC say that a bike rider was killed in a terrible hit-and-run accident earlier this month. The deadly wreck took place a little after 10 p.m. on a weeknight when police say a 23-year-old college student hit 27-year-old Zachary Paul Tyler from behind and then fled the scene of the accident.

Police say they received an urgent 911 call from a passerby, a medical supply truck driver, who came upon the accident scene and stopped to try and help the victim. Authorities say the truck driver tried to perform CPR on the victim but it was too late and emergency medical responders ultimately pronounced him dead at the scene of the accident.

A spokesperson for the Wilmington Police Department says that the department initially had very few clues to go on while investigating the accident. The only thing police knew was that the vehicle that hit the bicyclist was believed to be white in color and would have heavy front-end damage.  It only took a few days for cops to use this to track down the responsible party, Judith Margaret Nemeth. Neighbors had reported an abandoned vehicle that matched this description and police were able to close in on the woman. Nemeth has now been charged with felony hit and run and misdemeanor death by motor vehicle.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, 618 bicyclists died in crashes with passenger vehicles in 2010. The number is far too high and represents hundreds of families that have felt the pain of losing a loved one too soon.
