Upon their arrival, they discovered an adult male pedestrian who appeared to have been struck by a vehicle. Sadly, he died at the scene. The victim’s identity has not yet been released as police are still attempting to notify his family.

Injuries Caused by Drunk Drivers
Injuries sustained during a drunk driving accident are usually more severe than in other types of traffic accidents. Due to impairment, a drunk driver can easily lose control of their vehicle resulting in a vehicle rollover or a head-on collision.
The injuries most frequently sustained during a drunk driving accident are:
- Traumatic brain injuries
- Damage to the spinal cord
- Paralysis
- Broken bones
- Traumatic amputations
- Soft tissue injuries, like whiplash
- Wrongful death
No victim or family should be forced to carry the economic burden of their own damages, or their loved one’s fatal injuries. We can help you bring the intoxicated driver to account for their negligent actions. The insurance company is going to do everything in its power to unfairly minimize your financial compensation in order to protect its bottom line. Our Virginia drunk driving injury lawyers have the experience and the skill needed to fight the insurance company and collect the maximum amount of financial compensation available for your injuries or your family member’s death.

Punitive Damages for Drunk Drivers
Unlike the damages listed above, punitive damages are non-compensatory. Rather, these damages are awarded to the victim or their family and are intended to punish the defendant for behavior that is considered grossly negligent. They are also meant to discourage others from engaging in similar conduct.
Victims of Virginia drunk driving accidents could also be eligible to recover punitive damages from the driver and their insurance company if the intoxicated driver refused to take a blood test or had a blood-alcohol level of .15% or higher. In these cases, punitive damages would be presumed.
