Pittsylvania County, VA Car Crash Kills Teen Severely Injures Driver | Shapiro, Washburn & Sharp

Tyler Michael Perow, 13, died from an automobile accident that happened around 2:30 p.m. Saturday on Crane Road, near the small town of Witt in Pittsylvania County. Perow was one of the four passengers in the car which was driven by 17-year old teen who is a student at Chatham High School.  Those riding in the car included an 11-year old girl who attends Twin Springs Elementary School, who is recovering from major injuries. Two of the passengers attended Tunstall Middle School together with Perow.

State police say that the car was travelling in excess of 65 mph when it crashed in a curve.  The 17-year old driver appears responsible for the accident, and who was not mentioned to have sustained major injuries will have to face reckless driving charges according to the State police.

According to a document prepared from NHTSA, here are some sobering statistics regarding teen driving accidents: 14% of deaths due to motor vehicle accidents are teenagers and 53% of the time these accidents occur on weekends. In 2000, the estimated economic cost of police-reported crashes involving drivers between 15 and 20 years old totalled $32.8 billion.

This terribly tragic car accident likely has shattered the lives of the family, friends and loved ones of these children. The teenager’s death from a speeding car crash is sad indeed. Many times crashes like this are due to distraction of the driver. The more teens in a car, the more likely something bad will happen.
