Tolly Car was sentenced to 25-39 months in prison after he caused a car accident that led to one fatality and one injury in March of 2007. Carr was driving home early in the morning when the car accident occurred. Casey Bokhoven, a 26 year old Winston-Salem, North Carolina (NC) resident was standing outside of a pub when he was struck and killed. Fjola Ingvadottir Wilson, who was in the vehicle with Carr at the time of the accident, suffered injuries. At the time of the car accident Carr’s blood alcohol level was .13; which is over the .08 legal limits in North Carolina (NC). He was arrested on the scene by Winston-Salem police and served four months in prison before his court hearing where he was found guilty of felony death by motor vehicle. While the time served in prison and public speaking events held by Carr will not bring back Casey Bokhoven, the first hand account of the dangers of drinking and driving are a good lesson to all drivers. During his speech, Carr told the audience that, “It’s kind of this unwritten rule, this subconscious thinking that I can go out and I can hang out and I can have fun but nothing bad is going to happen to me because I don’t have any bad intentions.” Tragically, drinking and driving happens everyday. If you plan on drinking, utilize the designated driver program and do not get behind the wheel after you have had a drink.
