Common North Carolina Motorcycle Accidents

Every motorcycle accident is unique, but some types of accidents occur more often than others. Sadly, thousands of motorcyclists are injured every year in North Carolina and throughout the United States because of negligence on the part of the other driver. The leading types of motorcycle accidents that take place in North Carolina are:

Left Turn Accidents

In one recent year, 76% of motorcycle accidents occurred because a car turned left in front of an oncoming rider. In the majority of cases, the negligent driver fails to correctly estimate the speed of the oncoming rider. Drivers can also completely fail to notice a motorcycle. No matter what the cause, when left turn accidents take place, motorcyclists are usually ejected from their bikes and left severely injured.

Rear-End Accidents

Rear-end accidents take place when one vehicle runs into the back of another. Although these crashes usually occur at low speeds, when a larger vehicle runs into the back of a bike, the impact is usually forceful enough to throw the rider from their bike onto the asphalt and cause them serious injuries.

Lane Change Accidents

Motorcycles are much smaller and harder to see than standard passenger vehicles. This means they are much more likely to be overlooked when drivers check their blind spots. A lot of these accidents happen because a negligent driver changed lanes and struck a motorcyclist they didn’t even know was there.

Dooring Accidents

Just like cyclists in metropolitan areas, motorcyclists can be injured when an oblivious driver opens their car door without being aware of their surroundings. Anytime a vehicle occupant pushes a car door open along a busy street, the potential for a dooring accident and serious injuries is present.

DUI Accidents

People are more prone to making bad driving decisions when they are under the influence of drugs or alcohol. Intoxicated drivers are the cause of thousands of motorcycle accidents every year, some of which are fatal.

Not every motorcycle accident involves another vehicle. Another common cause of motorcycle accidents is mechanical issues with the bike itself. If you were injured in a crash caused by a shoddy repair or a defective part, you may have a valid claim against the negligent party.
