In 2012, the state of Virginia passed a law that requires all DUI offenders, including first-time offenders, to put an ignition interlock Breathalyzer system in their vehicle at their expense. This law was passed because it was believed that all convicted drunk drivers having such devices in their cars would lead to fewer repeat offenses.
