Michael P. Jones, a Richmond resident (Virginian Pilot, 09-20-13) was enjoying a ride on his motorcycle when his life came to an abrupt and tragic end. He was hit and killed by a truck while traveling down Interstate 64 (I-64) West in Norfolk, VA.
The truck driver was reportedly speeding and intoxicated. The truck driver was charged with involuntary manslaughter and DUI as a result of this terrible accident. The truck driver already has a DUI conviction on his record, according to the Virginian Pilot article.
Our deepest sympathies go out to the Jones family. Losing someone you care about is never easy, but the pain is made that much worse when the loss is sudden and unexpected. The family may also be haunted with the thought that this awful accident could have been avoided, if only the truck driver exercised more caution before getting behind the wheel while under the influence.
Unfortunately, wrongful death wrecks as a result of intoxicated drivers are quite common in Virginia. For example, in 2012, there were 8,777 accidents involving intoxicated drivers which resulted in 229 deaths and 5,861 injuries, according to the Virginia DMV.
