Six people were treated at Rockingham Memorial Hospital after a recent early-morning truck and bus accident on I-81 in Virginia. The truck driver involved in the collision has been charged with reckless driving in the wake of the crash, though the accident is still under investigation.
According to Virginia State Police, 29-year-old Dean Crawford of Staunton was driving a Sysco Food Services refrigerated tractor-trailer northbound on Interstate 81 near the 244 mile marker at around four in the morning on Tuesday, August 14, when he merged his truck into the left passing lane. The truck struck a New York Sky Express tour bus carrying 40 passengers and driven by 50-year-old Quan Guan Pan. The bus was pushed off of the left side of the road and onto the median, while the truck fell onto its side.
The driver of the truck, the driver of the bus, and five of the passengers on the bus were injured in the accident and taken by ambulance to the hospital for treatment. All five injured bus occupants have since been treated and released from the medical center, though the status of the truck driver is unknown. The truck driver, who police say turned into the bus, was charged with reckless driving. It is unclear if any other charges will be added as the truck accident investigation continues.
Lanes of I-81 were closed during the accident cleanup, though the road was completely reopened by mid-rush hour at 8:30 the following morning.
