An Apex, North Carolina (NC) resident was involved in a car accident in Holly Springs, North Carolina (NC) Sunday night that left one dead and one injured.
Cynthia Rennee Ellerbee was traveling on Stephens Road when her car veered off the right side of the road. She continued to drive off the road, hitting several mail boxes, before the car ran in to a pine tree.
The North Carolina Highway Patrol responded to the car accident. Tragically, Cynthia Rennee Ellerbee was found dead at the scene. The passenger in the vehicle at the time was injured. Highway patrol troopers think Ellerbee was driving recklessly at the time of the accident. She was not wearing her seat belt.
Wearing your seat belt greatly reduces your risk of being injured or killed in a car crash. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, or NHTSA, reported that in 64% of all car accident fatalities the person was not buckled up. That amounts to 10,404 people a year.
Not wearing a seat belt is not only dangerous, but in many states it is illegal. North Carolina law requires drivers and passengers to wear their seat belts at all times in the vehicle. Not buckling up can result in a fine if you are caught.
