Farmer Killed by Tractor During Last Harvest | Shapiro, Washburn & Sharp

Guy “Buddy” Pope Roundtree, Jr. was preparing for another day of farming. This is something he’s done for years but was ready to set aside at the tender age of 64 for a new, post-farming life in Newsoms, Virginia (VA). This was his final harvest, unfortunately, in more ways than one. He was tragically killed when his tractor went haywire causing his death.

My deepest condolences go out to his friends and family. Mr. Roundtree’s son was working with his Dad when the accident occurred. I hope, in time, the pain from this devastating loss will ease.

“He was a fine man and everybody knew him,” said Mayor Harvey Porter, Jr. according to the Tidewater News. “He was loved by Newsoms’ people.”

The tractor jumped into gear suddenly which led to Mr. Roundtree being pulled under the machine, according to The Virginian-Pilot. An investigation needs to be conducted to determine what caused the sudden gear shift and if it was a typical problem in this particular tractor model.

“It was a real tragedy,” said Southhampton County Sheriff Vernie Francis, Jr. “Farming is dangerous.”
